Anywaves, a provider of advanced RF systems for space, has completed the first successful deployment of a commercial Reflectarray antenna in orbit, marking a significant milestone in nanosatellite communications. The development was initiatedunder a 2020 contract from the French Space Agency (CNES) to evaluate high-gain deployable antennas compatible with small spacecraft.

The Reflectarray—designed in the Ka-band and adaptable across X, Ku, and Q/V bands—combines a planar, foldable architecture with reflector-based beam shaping. A passive mechanical deployment mechanism allows it to fit within the volume constraints of nanosatellite platforms while delivering significantly higher gain than traditional patch or helix antennas.
While Reflectarray technology has flown on NASA’s ISARA, MarCO-A, and MarCO-B missions, Anywaves is believed to be the first commercial provider to field this technology in orbit as a productized, flight-ready solution. The antenna enables higher data rates and reduced power requirements, making it well-suited to LEO constellations and exploration-class spacecraft.
The Anywaves technology is designed for both scalability and manufacturability. Developed in collaboration with COMAT and Nimésis, the antenna is optimized for serial production to meet rising demand for compact, high-performance communications systems in next-generation space programs.
By enabling efficient high-throughput communications in small satellite architectures, the Reflectarray offers satellite operators a cost-effective upgrade path—either by increasing system bandwidth or reducing overall platform power draw.
